'm pam cook. tori campbell is off. it's monday. april 15th. >>> a man is undergoing a medical evaluation after responding to a berkeley call. we're live on dwight way with alex savidge. >> reporter: police are still trying to sort through why this took place. this was an emergency medical call that for whatever reason turned violent. one berkeley firefighter grazed by a bullet when a man who lives in this house across the street started firing shots at firefighters. this is on the 1200 block of dwight way near san pablo. that firefighter was on the scene and didn't have to go to the hospital. police tell us the shooter is an 88-year-old man. this is video as he was taken away by paramedics for a mental evaluation. there were as many as five berkeley firefighters around 1:45 responding to that medical call when police say the man inside pulled out a gun and started firing shots. one of the firefighters was hit by a bullet but only suffered a glancing wound. the firefighters ran out of the house and police moved in to surround the place. there was a brief standoff between police and this a

prayers are with the campbell family of medford. they're here today. their daughter crystal was always smiling. those who knew her said with her red hair and freckles and her ever-eager willingness to speak her mind, she was beautiful, sometimes she would be a little noisy. and everybody loved her for it. she would have turned 30 next month. as her mother said, through her tears, this doesn't make any sense. our prayers are with the liu family of china, who sent their daughter to b.u. so she could experience all this city has to offer. she was a 23-year-old student far from home. and in the heartache of her family and friends on both sides of a great ocean, were reminded of the humanity that we all share. our prayers are with the richard family of dorchester. to denise and the young daughter, jane. as they fight to recover. and our hearts are broken for 8-year-old martin. with his big smile and bright eyes. his last hours were as perfect as an 8-year-old boy could hope for. with his family eating ice cream at a sporting event. and we're left with two enduring images of this little boy.

and his family tonight. the second person killed has just been identified as 29-year-old krystle campbell of medford, mass. she was reportedly at the finish line as a spectator. we're still waiting on the name of the third victim. and as we wait, there are two main aspects to this story now. what happened and the investigation into what happened. we begin with that. and nbc news justice correspondent pete williams. pete, what do officials know? what are they saying? >> well, consider this interesting fact. i just talked to a person who has done a lot of bomb investigations who says that under normal conditions, it is possible to gather up 93 to 98% of the bomb devices themselves. even though they will be in little pieces and will be all bent up. most of the bombs will not be consumed by the explosion. so they're optimistic that they will have within a fairly short time here, it may take a couple of days, a pretty good idea of exactly how these devices were made. and already they say they have a rough idea of what components were used to make the bombs. unfortunately, these are very common

campbell and richard martin were killed. >> reporter: good morning, richard. let's talk about the investigation first. the authorities have been vesting photographs, images from anybody in the public. it appears that is now paying off, perhaps the most successful images coming from a security camera at lord & taylor across the street from the finish line. but those images show what appears to be somebody taking duffel bags and placing them at the spot where the bomb exploded. so there's a major focus of attention on those pictures trying to analyze them to see if they can then lead to who may indeed be a suspect. meantime, as you mentioned the president will be making a visit here to boston for an interfaith memorial service. the president will be joined here by so many bostonians. of course, one of the concerns, security has, because it's another large gathering if somebody would have tried to do something. they've told folks if they're gathering, they may not bring bags, backpacks. they should come with a few things, maybe a phone in their hand, but not much more. that's 11:
